From The Oval to Ahmedabad: Rhythm uninterrupted for Siraj

If fast bowling is about rhythm, momentum, and the harmony between run-up, technique, skill and impact, Mohammed Siraj has shown he has never lost it since the England series. Thursday, the first day of the Test between India and West Indies in Ahmedabad, felt like the sixth day of the Oval Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Even two months on, he showed no sign of losing his bite, pace, or - most importantly - his rhythm. He picked up in India right from where he had left off in England.

The only difference between then and now - rather England and India - was that Siraj had developed a notion of often summoning his full skills, abilities, and prowess, only in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, the responsibility of being the spearhead bringing the best out of him. At the Narendra Modi Stadium, however, he showed that he could excel even when Bumrah is around. In fact, he overshadowed his more fancied new-ball partner, widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers in the world.

The blemish of the day was Siraj's failure to complete a five-for - a feat he had achieved with so much guts, gusto, and fierce gumption on that sunny morning at The Oval, bowling India to a mind-numbing six-run victory against England, leaving the impression that whenever he had the ball in hand, wickets were guaranteed. "There are no free wickets (in international cricket)," Siraj said, smiling. "I had to work hard for those four wickets. I got wickets working hard in England as well. If it were easy, I would have got the fifth here."

Wickets are never easy to come by in international cricket, but on Thursday, Siraj looked unstoppable. He struck in his second over, forcing an edge from Tagenarine Chanderpaul with a short delivery that was on his body. In tennis terms, such a serve on the body would be nearly impossible to return, and the young left-handed batter could do little but edge it to the keeper. His second wicket, Brandon King, fell to a rip-snorter. Siraj had set him up with previous deliveries, leaving King helplessly to watch the ball nip back and rattle the stumps.

After forcing Alick Athanaze to edge one to the slips - a routine catch - Siraj may have bowled the ball of the day for his fourth wicket. Roston Chase, who looked in good touch, was completely deceived by a wobble-seam delivery that caught the West Indies skipper off guard. The ball straightened after being delivered with an onside trajectory. "Yes, the wobble-seam delivery is such that it sometimes straightens, sometimes cuts. This one straightened with the shiny side," Siraj explained.

But connoisseurs often wonder how Siraj manages to generate such pace, movement, and penetration despite slightly bending his front foot at the point of landing - an Achilles' heel that could, in theory, limit a pacer's effectiveness. Although that is seen as a commonplace phenomenon among pacers - even Wasim Akram apparently had that tendency. One would be more effective without that slight bend.

"He lacks the strength to control his landing and therefore shows instability on impact, largely due to poor back-foot reactivity. The front leg doesn't brace because of two reasons: either he isn't strong enough to cope with the deceleration forces around the hamstrings and quads, or his poor pelvic alignment - caused by an ineffective back foot - forces the front leg to cross over the midline," says a famous biomechanic and fast bowling expert in UK's Pacelab academy.

But Siraj makes up for these biometrical issues with his forceful run-up, perfect follow through and of course large heart. He has also developed an outswinger and wobble seam delivery that combine well with his stock inswingers. Those armouries work deadly in pairs rather than as a solo skill. The batters are always guessing which way the ball will move, just like King and Chase were on Thursday.

Siraj said the confidence was running high after the England series. "You gain a lot of confidence after a series like the one in England. Performing against a strong side gives you a different kind of belief. You must have seen that confidence today. After the England series, I focused on my training and bowling.

"Last week, I played a match for India A. When you return after such a long gap, you rediscover your rhythm. In Lucknow, it was very hot, but that match gave me good preparation before this series. After many years, I had such a long break, and I really enjoyed it. I also used the time to work on my fitness."

With four wickets from Siraj, three from Bumrah, two from Kuldeep Yadav, and one from Washington Sundar, West Indies - having elected to bat - collapsed to 162 all out in the 45th over. India replied strongly, erasing 121 runs for the loss of just two wickets. At stumps on Day One, the big question was how long the Test would last. With Siraj in such splendid rhythm, backed ably by the rest of the attack, an early finish seemed firmly on the cards.

Wall Street sets more records, but bond yields drop following discouraging data on the job market

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks rose to more records on Wednesday, as Wall Street still doesn’t care much about the shutdown of the U.S. government, but yields sank in the bond market following the latest discouraging signals on the economy.

The S&P 500 climbed 0.3% to top its prior all-time high, which was set last week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 43 points, or 0.1%, to its own record set the day before, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.4%.

The action was stronger in the bond market, where Treasury yields dropped after a report suggested hiring may have been much weaker across the country last month than economists expected.

Employers outside the government actually cut 32,000 more jobs than they added, according to the survey by ADP Research, with the Midwest taking particularly hard hits. What’s worse, the survey also revised down its numbers for employment in August, to a loss of 3,000 jobs from a previously reported gain of 54,000.

Usually, traders on Wall Street wait for a more comprehensive jobs report that comes from the U.S. government each month to suss out how the job market is doing. The U.S. government gets its data from a larger sample of employers than the ADP survey, which does not have a perfect track record predicting what the more comprehensive report will say each month.

But the next Labor Department report, scheduled for Friday, is likely to be delayed because of the shutdown of the U.S. government that began just after midnight.

“Whether this is an accurate statistic or not, people in the markets believe that it signals something,” according to Carl Weinberg, chief economist at High Frequency Economics. “The signal from today’s headline will not be a good one.”

The hope on Wall Street has been that the job market will continue to slow by a very precise amount: enough to convince the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates, but not by so much that it brings a recession.

That’s a delicate balance to achieve, and every economic report from the U.S. government that gets delayed only increases the uncertainty about whether it’s possible. Stocks have already run to records on expectations for coming cuts to rates, so a lack of them could send the market lower.

To be sure, the stock market and economy have typically powered through past shutdowns, particularly if they are short in duration. But this shutdown could be different in a couple ways, including the threat that the White House may use it to push for large-scale firings of federal workers.

On Wall Street, Nike rose 6.4% after blowing past analysts’ expectations for profit in the latest quarter. The athletic giant reported strong growth for apparel sold in North America.

Lithium America’s stock that trades in the United States jumped 23.3% after the Canadian company said the U.S. government agreed to let it draw from a previously announced $2.26 billion loan. As part of the agreement, the U.S. Department of Energy will take an ownership stake in the Vancouver-based company.

Lithium Americas is developing a lithium project in Nevada with General Motors, and it follows Intel and other companies where the U.S. government has recently taken an ownership stake.

On the losing side of the market was Peloton Interactive, which dropped 3.7%. It got a cold reception to its unveiling of an AI and computer vision system, along with other equipment designed for cross training.

Corteva sank 9.1% after announcing a plan to split into two companies, each with its own stock. One will hold onto the company’s seed business, while the other will focus on crop protection.

Cal-Maine Foods fell 1.2% after the egg company’s profit and revenue for the latest quarter fell short of analysts’ expectations.

All told, the S&P 500 rose 22.74 points to 6,711.20. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 43.21 to 46,441.10, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 95.15 to 22,755.16.

In stock markets abroad, indexes rose in Europe following a mixed finish in Asia.

In the bond market, the yield on the 10-year Treasury sank to 4.10% from 4.16% late Tuesday.

Yields fell as the weaker-than-expected payroll report from ADP firmed expectations for coming cuts to rates by the Fed. So did another report showing that U.S. manufacturing was weaker last month than economists expected.

Several manufacturers told the Institute for Supply Management’s surveyors that they’re still feeling pain because of tariffs.

Indian financial markets were shut on Thursday, October 2, on the account of Dussehra and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

On Wednesday, the Indian stock market snapped its eight-day losing streak and ended with strong gains after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) kept the repo rate and policy stance unchanged, and unveiled a slew of measures for the banking sector.

The Sensex jumped 715.69 points, or 0.89%, to close at 80,983.31, while the Nifty 50 settled 225.20 points, or 0.92%, to close at 24,836.30.

“We expect positive momentum to sustain, supported by an accommodative monetary policy, favourable monsoon season and festive-led boost in demand,” said Siddhartha Khemka - Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd.

Asian Markets

Asian markets traded mostly higher on Friday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street as investors shrugged off the US government shutdown. Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.36%, while the Topix index gained 0.35%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index futures indicated a slightly lower opening. Chinese and South Korean markets were closed for holidays.

Gift Nifty Today

Gift Nifty was trading around 24,942 level, a discount of nearly 25 points from the Nifty futures’ previous close, indicating a weak start for the Indian stock market indices.

Wall Street

US stock market indices ended at a fresh record on Thursday led by technology stocks, even as a US government shutdown dragged into a second day.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 78.62 points, or 0.17%, to 46,519.72, while the S&P 500 gained 0.06% points, or 4.15%, to 6,715.35. The Nasdaq Composite closed 88.89 points, or 0.39%, higher at 22,844.05.

Nvidia share price rose 0.91%, Advanced Micro Devices shares rallied 3.49%, Intel stock price jumped 3.78%, while Apple shares gained 0.66%. Tesla stock price plunged 5.11%, Berkshire Hathaway shares fell 0.5% and Occidental share price declined 7.3%.

US Government Shutdown

US President Donald Trump said he will meet with White House Budget Director Russell Vought to discuss potential cuts to the federal workforce, ramping up pressure on Democrats to end the government shutdown, which is entering its second day.

Tesla Sales

Tesla Inc. reported a surprise increase in quarterly vehicle sales as US consumers accelerated electric-car purchases before federal tax credits expired. The company delivered a record 497,099 vehicles worldwide during the period, up 7.4% from a year ago.

Gold Prices

Gold prices retreated as the dollar rose and investors booked profits after a five-day rally. Spot gold price slipped 0.2% to $3,856.58 an ounce.

Crude Oil Prices

Crude oil prices gained, but were on track for the biggest weekly decline since late June, ahead of an OPEC meeting. Brent crude oil rose 0.45% to $64.40 a barrel, while the US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures gained 0.46% to $60.76.

Gold (XAUUSD) & Silver Price Forecast: Metals Hold Support as Traders Await PCE Report

At the same time, durable goods orders rose 2.9% in August, reversing July’s 2.7% decline, while initial jobless claims fell to 218,000. Analysts say the string of upbeat indicators reflects underlying resilience in the U.S. economy, reinforcing demand for the dollar and tempering flows into non-yielding assets like gold.

Silver Slips as Traders Await Inflation Data

Silver also came under pressure, sliding 1.03% as the stronger greenback and firm macro data limited upside momentum. Traders are now turning their focus to the U.S. Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) Price Index, due Friday.

The report, widely seen as the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, is expected to show a 0.3% monthly increase and a 2.7% annual pace. “Markets are cautious ahead of PCE,” said one commodity strategist.

“The Fed needs confirmation that inflation is trending lower before it can justify further easing.”

Rate-Cut Expectations and Tariffs Provide a Floor

Despite the dollar’s rally, expectations for Fed rate cuts continue to cushion gold from sharper declines. According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, traders see an 85% probability of a 25-basis-point cut in October and just over a 60% chance of another in December.

Fed officials including Stephen Miran, Austan Goolsbee, and Mary Daly have stressed the need to balance inflation risks with labor market stability, leaving policy decisions highly data-dependent.

At the same time, newly announced U.S. tariffs, 100% on branded pharmaceuticals, 25% on heavy-duty trucks, and 50% on kitchen cabinets starting October 1, along with persistent geopolitical tensions, are helping preserve gold’s role as a hedge.

Market participants now await the PCE data release for further clarity. A hotter-than-expected print could strengthen the dollar and weigh on metals, while softer numbers may revive safe-haven demand for both gold and silver.

Short-Term Forecast

Gold holds near $3,745 with resistance at $3,760–$3,790, while silver trades at $45.02, eyeing $45.55–$45.90 if momentum extends. Key supports rest at $3,701 and $44.80.

Gold is trading near $3,745, consolidating after its recent rally toward $3,790. On the 4-hour chart, price is holding above the 50-EMA at $3,712, with the 200-EMA far lower at $3,570, showing broader strength. The Fibonacci retracement highlights support at $3,701 and $3,674, while resistance remains near $3,760 and $3,790.

Candlesticks show indecision, with small-bodied formations suggesting buyers and sellers are evenly matched. The RSI sits near 54, reflecting neutral momentum after easing from overbought levels earlier this week.

If price holds above $3,701, gold could retest $3,760–$3,790. A close below $3,674, however, would expose downside toward $3,628. Traders should monitor trendline support for confirmation.
